Reggae Mourns the Passing of Cat Coore

The global reggae community is mourning the loss of Cat Coore, the legendary Jamaican guitarist, composer, and founding member of the iconic band Third World. Revered for his masterful musicianship and deep cultural influence, Cat Coore’s death marks the end of an era for reggae music and Caribbean musical heritage.

Born Stephen “Cat” Coore in 1956, Cat Coore emerged during reggae’s formative years and helped shape the genre’s international sound. As a core architect of Third World’s identity, his guitar work fused roots reggae with soul, funk, jazz, and African rhythms creating a sophisticated, globally appealing sound that set the band apart. His family and band confirmed that he died suddenly on Sunday, January 18, 2026. He was 69 years old.

Formed in the early 1970s, Third World quickly rose to international prominence, becoming one of Jamaica’s most successful crossover reggae groups. Cat Coore’s musical vision was central to that success. His melodic guitar lines, tight arrangements, and innovative compositions powered classics such as “96° in the Shade,” “Now That We Found Love,” and “Try Jah Love.”
